About

The Dorothea Lakes complex is a country estate which is located ten miles south of Caernarfon, two miles from the A487 trunk road (Bangor to Porthmadog) in Talysarn near Penygroes village in the county of Gwynedd in North Wales. The complex is four miles from the coast, just two hundred and fifty meters from the northern perimeter of Snowdonia National Park and is in the heart of the North Wales tourist catchment area. It is made up of a number of disused quarries located around five lakes and set on three hundred acres of land. The five lakes on the complex are actually former quarry pits that have long since filled up with water from underground springs and precipitation..

History

The property was originally assembled in the early nineteenth century by a local landlord who acquired some of the fragmented independent slate quarrying enterprises based there at that time. The complex expanded over the years as the owners purchased neighbouring quarries including the associated waterways - these water resources were essential to the slate manufacturing process. The Dyffryn Nantlle region was one of the major slate quarrying centres in Wales during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. During that period there were more than a dozen quarries in the area, some of which are now being considered as World Heritage sites. Quarrying in the area commenced in 1826 and continued for over one hundred and forty years. The last quarry pit closed in 1969 as new, lower-cost man-made materials for roofing came on to the market.
